Gemstone of the week: Topaz
Topaz is a versatile gemstone that can be found in various colors, with its most common shades being natural yellow to colorless, usually from Namibia. In Australia, areas exist where colorless to light blue topaz can be discovered. This gemstone is a popular choice for jewelry worldwide, with many cultures incorporating it in their designs. Although it is typcially found in a Colorless to yellow hue in nature, it can be treated to accomplish any color of the rainbow. The most common colors we think of are the light sky blue, medium swiss blue and the beautiful darker London blue topaz. Imperial topaz, also known as pink topaz, got its name from the Russian tzars, and it was once exclusively reserved for the royal family in Russia. Blue topaz, the state gem of Texas, can be found naturally in the state, but most often, it is treated to achieve the desired blue hue, somewhat reducing its value. Topaz stands out among gemstones for its size, with the El-Dorado Topaz being the largest faceted gem known. The origin of the name "topaz" remains uncertain, adding to the mystery surrounding this captivating stone. Traditionally, topaz has been linked to promoting good health, enhancing intelligence, as well as instilling bravery and courage, making it a gem of historical significance, even used by ancient soldiers in battle.
Imperial Topaz was the original birthstone for Novemeber due to its rarity and high value, it has been replaced with Citrine. Blue topaz is also the birthstone for december. On the Mohs hardness scale it is an 8 out of 10. This makes it very durable and a good choice for every day wear
